With its impressive history, the Trippenhuis is a unique location, seat of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The Trippenhuis building was constructed between 1660 and 1662 as a residence for the Trip brothers, who made their fortune as arms dealers. It has been the seat of the Academy since the early 19th century and for a time it also housed the Rijksmuseum, home of the Night Watch and other well-known works of art. When the Rijksmuseum moved to its new location in 1885, the Academy stayed behind and gradually expanded into the surrounding canal-side houses, creating the Trippenhuis complex. After extensive renovation, this collection of buildings, each one unique in style and appeal, now constitutes the vibrant heart of science and art in the Netherlands.

Tinbergen Room

The Tinbergen Room is named after Academy members and brothers Jan and Niko Tinbergen. Jan won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1969 and Niko won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1973. After a major renovation that took more than two years, this modern conference room and the adjoining Foyer are once again in full use. The light-coloured wood panelling gives the room an inviting and professional look.
Intersecting beams break up the expanse of ceiling, with a large skylight in the middle. The rooms are equipped with a modern climate control system and have large windows overlooking the garden and the historic Trippenhuis Building.

Foyer

The bright and accessible Foyer consists of the Willem Einthoven and Carolina MacGillavry rooms. They form an ‘enfilade’, i.e. connecting rooms with spacious doorways that provide a vista through the entire suite. Large windows connect indoor and outdoor, and the bronze facade panels refer to the metal that formed the basis for the Trip brothers’ trade in weapons. Artist Evi Vingerling created the ceiling paintings. Inspired by the ceiling paintings in the historic Trippenhuis Building, she chose to use stylised, natural motifs in these rooms.
